Fighting Fraud – Special Investigation Units

BHHC sets and maintains high standards of integrity and performance in providing claim service to customers. The prompt and fair payment of claims to which a BHHC policy applies is a priority in the BHHC claim operation. Equally important is resisting fraudulent claims. Proactively identifying and investigating suspicious claims, and aggressively resisting the payment of fraudulent claims, are principles that guide us.

BHHC maintains a Special Investigation Unit (SIU) in California devoted to the detection, investigation and prevention of Workers Compensation insurance fraud. BHHC maintains a separate SIU in its Omaha, Nebraska office devoted to the detection, investigation and prevention of insurance fraud in its other lines of business. Each unit is staffed with experienced professionals, including professionals with law enforcement backgrounds, who are equipped with the skills and tools necessary to effectively combat insurance fraud of all types.

It is important to recognize potential fraud at the beginning of a claim. Each claim examiner is trained to look for “red flag” indicators of a suspicious claim and to make early referrals to SIU. Appropriate investigation by the SIU follows, with activity between SIU, the examiner, and outside investigators and attorneys closely coordinated. Where fraud is identified claim denial usually follows. When appropriate a referral is made to law enforcement authorities. BHHC actively cooperates with criminal prosecutions for fraud where local authorities elect to pursue these charges.
